Airline Passengers Caught In US With Cocaine Worth $400,000

Customs and Border Protection officers at New York’s JFK airport said they captured two more passengers who attempted to smuggle drugs by strapping packages of cocaine to their legs.
The seized cocaine found on the two men held an estimated $400,000 street value.
The most recent seizure came when two men tried to bring more than 10 kilos of cocaine into the United States on April 19, officers said. Both men allegedly had the drugs taped to their legs under their clothing, and one man taped the drugs to his back.
The two men traveled on the same flight from the Dominican Republic to New York last week, but it’s unclear if they knew each other.

“This latest seizure demonstrates our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these illicit drugs,” Leon Hayward, acting director of CBP’s New York field operations, stated in a news release.
In the statement, it was not mentioned what tipped off the officers to conduct additional inspections on the men. But they were taken to a private search room where officers seized 23 pounds (10.4 kilos) of cocaine estimated at a nearly $400,000 street value.
The two men were arrested and are facing federal narcotics smuggling charges, according to the CBP.
Last month at the same airport, officers said they discovered two other passengers on separate days with drugs taped under their pants.

Banks Begin Five Per Cent Contributions To SMEs

The five per cent banks contributions from their profit after tax, tagged Agriculture/SMEs Fund (AGSMEs Fund) has taken off.
The banks, through the Bankers Committee, headed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Governor Godwin Emefiele, reached the deal at the end of a two-day yearly retreat in Lagos in December 2016.
The development will see to the full take off of financing of initiatives for small businesses at single digit and realisation of the seed fund estimated at above N30 billion for disbursement to successful applicants.
Speaking at the 32nd Bankers Committee meeting in Lagos yesterday, the CBN Director of Banking Supervision, Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi, said banks are now determined to fulfill the pledge by contributing the agreed five per cent.
The move, which the committee had earlier said it is banking industry contributions, will have the pooled resources domiciled at the CBN, to ensure that it is readily available for disbursement.

The CBN also explained that its optimism on economic rebound sooner is based on positive indices, which remain steady overtime, with favourable outlook in the medium term.
The Acting Director of Corporate Communications, CBN, Isaac Okorafor yesterday listed the stability in the troubled oil-rich Niger Delta region as the reason for the new optimism, as it had boosted revenue earnings to the Federal Government.
Okorafor said CBN’s efforts in solving the foreign exchange crisis has also yielded results, as pass-through inflation and the country’s headline inflation have moderated two months consecutively.
According to the CBN’s spokesman, the price of oil has been stable, even though not as high as desired. The apex bank has supported the real sector with foreign exchange intervention, agricultural production has improved, as more farmers are getting loans and more are seeing agriculture as business.

The Managing Director of Rand Merchant Bank Nigeria, Michael Larbie, in his response said the banks are now more determined to support CBN’s initiatives in the foreign exchange market.
According to Larbie, all legitimate demands from customers will not be rejected anymore, as strong measures that ensure speculators do not take advantage of the situation have been put in place.
The Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, disclosed that the committee deliberated on some of the topical issues of electronic fraud, particularly on bank cards and agreed to set up a central repository- a database of fraud through the system, which would allow them to streamline activities of the perpetrators.

Muslim Students Back Buhari’s Anti-corruption War

Muslim Students in the country yesterday threw their weight behind the anti-graft war of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and specifically commended the Federal government for introducing the “whistle blowing policy” which according to them has boost the war.
The group, under the aegis of Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) also urged the President to immediately deploy the recovered stolen funds from corrupt officials towards provision of “necessary and critical infrastructure, like power”.
The President of the MSSN, Zone B, in-charge of 17 States, Mushafau Kehinde Alaran spoke at a press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. His words: “Our great society, MSSN, in clear terms supports the anti-corruption war by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration. The introduction of whistle blowing as another device to expose corruption is accepted and appreciated.
“We hereby call on the President that the recovered funds so far that has gone through necessary prosecution and adjudged stolen should be immediately deployed to provision of necessary and critical infrastructure like power
and education.”
Alaran also asked Legislators at the National Assembly to be alive to their responsibilities and pass the 2017 Budget and other pending bills on anti-corruption in due course to aid the anti-graft war.
He however faulted a statement credited to the youth wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), through Daniel Kadzai that the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir Lawal, has religious undertone.
He argued that the statement is prejudice to the outcome of a committee set up by the Presidency and headed by Professor Yemi Osinbajo to look into the allegations against Lawal.

Alaran urged the Christian youths to emulate the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) by staying clear of partisan politics and “remain a religious body.”He said, “Nigerians are well informed and more sophisticated in reasoning than petty insinuations from CAN. We all know the grass cutting controversies predated the JAMB (Joint Admission and Matriculation Board) registration.
“This moment is historic in our journey to nation building as all Nigerians unanimously queued behind President Muhammadu Buhari for leading by example.
CAN should note that her divisive statement will not change minds of Nigerians who give the current administration the needed support to fight corruption, irrespective of religious affiliation of perpetrators.”

On the budget, he said, “We cannot imagine what is causing delay in the passage of the 2017 budget in April, 2017, delay in passing anti-corruption bill and the special court on corruption since 2015. The foreign exchange policy should have been a very desirable issue of attention. What we see is personal vendetta which is not the reason why they were elected.”
Alaran urged all those who have corruption charges against them to endeavour to submit themselves to proper prosecution in the interest of the Nigeria populace “who are the victims of the corruption saga.”

He stressed, “Nigeria is bigger than any individual or group of individuals.”

that you will always be there for her
She believed you are different She believed she had found love again She threw her pride away. She forgot the value she had attached to herself because of you She refused everyone that tried to compete with you for her
Therefore you could now hold her phone all day long

#EFCC Discovery: ;NIA, Others… Were They Awaken By whistle blowing policy. -Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, SAN, has said the recovered monies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should be guarded until there is a proof of ownership.
Falana recalled that “in 2014, two businessmen (an Israeli and a Nigerian) smuggled $9.3 million to South Africa from Nigeria. It was alleged that the private jet with which the fund was hauled was leased from the then President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.
“Both suspects were arrested while the fund was seized. The additional sum of $5.7 million sent to South Africa through a bank by the duo was also seized. Although the Federal Government was not implicated in the transfer of the fund, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) later claimed that the $15 million was meant for the purchase of arms from a firm in South Africa.
“We must avoid a situation whereby huge funds hidden in abandoned buildings and apartments are said to be “operational funds” kept by certain security agencies. If the EFCC had refused to seize the fund last week, the whistle-blower could have rushed to the media to accuse the Buhari administration of keeping stolen money for the 2019 general elections.
“Apart from the NIA, the Rivers State government is also laying claim to the fund. But instead of giving the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to hand over the money to the Rives State government, Governor Nyesom Wike should instruct his attorney-general to file an affidavit at the Federal High Court.
“But before doing that, he should carefully study the case of FRN v CBN (unreported) where the application of the Delta State government to claim the bribe of $15 million paid to the then EFCC chairman, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, by a former governor of the state was dismissed as the applicant was unable to prove that it owned the money.

“On a more serious note, are Nigerians to believe that an agency of the federal government kept about $50 million in an apartment without adequate security personnel to guard the money? Why was the fund not kept in a safe in the well-fortified ONSA? When was the National Intelligence Agency exempted from the Treasury Single Account (TSA)?
“If the DG of NIA has just gone to brief President Buhari that the fund was collected from former President Goodluck Jonathan for a special project, why did the briefing not take place before now? Since the NIA is in charge of external security why was it necessary to execute projects in the country? How much of such fund is being kept in private homes by the NIA and other security agencies?
“Since the whistle-blowing policy of the Federal Government commenced why has the NIA not deemed it fit to take the anti-graft agencies into confidence with respect to the fund being kept in Ikoyi for the so called covert operations?
“Is the Federal Government not being exposed to ridicule when corrupt public officers are competing with government departments to hide millions of United States dollars in dump sites and ‘safe’ apartments? Anyway, since the Federal High Court has granted the application filed by the EFCC for an interim forfeiture of the fund, it is no longer an internal affair of the Buhari administration. Let the National Intelligence Agency approach the court with convert proof to claim the money.”

FAAN Says Nnamdi Azikwe Airport To Reopen April 19th As Scheduled.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has said the reopening of Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport on the 19th of April is certaint.
The Managing Director FAAN, Engr. Saleh Dunoma on Sunday said inspection by Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, will be carried out today and if certified okay by the regulatory authority, will be reopen for flight operations.
“We will be ready by Monday, April 17 but we are leaving the remaining two days for Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, because they have to certify that what we have done is in accordance with their standards.
‘’If they do that, we will bring in the traffic. But if they do not, we have the opportunity of making corrections within the two days we have saved.
“No doubt about that, we will open it as scheduled. Just as I have said, we worked with NCAA throughout the period, they have been making corrections. But for formality, we need to make sure that all the necessary corrections meet the requirement of the civil aviation authority.
“All the critical items of work are 100% except may be two items, which are the markings and the cleaning. Other critical item which is not works but the inspection and certification will bring in traffic back to Abuja. Asphalt work is 100%, markings have reached almost 70%, the airfield lighting system has reached 80%.
“There is additional work which has nothing to do with this repair but we are seizing the opportunity of the closure of the airport to do it. This has to do with the APEX (Airport Excellence in Safety) related items. We are now levelling all the airfield lightings’ locations, all the installations and flash with the ground surface. In case of any skidding, there will not be concrete projection above the ground surface.
“We have not tampered with the Navaids. We just worked on the runway. What we tampered with is the airfield lightings and the airfield lightings are being returned to the same position. The runway does not need calibration. All we need to check is to make sure there is 100 per cent illumination. Calibration is done periodically. When the time comes for calibration, the appropriate authority will calibrate the Instrument Landing System (ILS).”

DOGARA- Proposed 2018 Census Will Cause Crisis

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara in a statement released Monday said the proposed 2018 population census would result to chaos if conducted before 2019 elections.
In the statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan in Abuja said the census “should be done when there is not so much at stake.
“If we are not going to achieve it in 2017, then we should just forget it until after 2019.
“If you conduct census at the niche of elections, there will be so much pressure, crisis and the lure for people to manipulate the figures for political reasons, such that the agency cannot even cope with.
“We may have something that resembles reality, but I can bet it, if the census is conducted in 2018, the outcome will be doubtable.
“I know who we are and I know the kind of litigations, backlashes and the pressure, but we don’t need all that now.
“We have so many challenges; let us empower the agencies to keep building on the blocks that they will leverage on in the future in order to do the exercise.’’
Recall that Directer General of the National Population Commission, Ghaji Bello recently said if logistics are provided the census would be conducted in 2018 with estimated cost of N272 billion naira.
The population of people in Nigeria is over 180 million.

Shehu Sani Commends Work Done At EFCC Head Office Building.

EFCC, Senate,
Senator Shehu Sani has commended the progress made in the construction of the Permanent site of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, describing the edifice as the best one can get anywhere and pledged to support the Commission in whatever way he can.
He made the comment while on a working visit to the permanent site to assess the level of work. He said the building needs to be completed on time to help the Commission coordinates its operations.

“There is no sane or responsible human being who is desirous of the progress of this country that will not be supportive of this project. The very fact that the commission’s offices are scattered around the town impedes their ability to coordinate.”
Sani said since the cardinal objective of this administration is to strengthen the war against corruption, the project should be given all the necessary support by the government to enable prompt completion.
He commended the commission for its war against corruption and called on all Nigerians including the international community to give their support in order to salvage the future of the country from the cankerworm.

“There is no reason why this project should not be given all the necessary support. This administration having anti- corruption as its major agenda, I believe that this project will be given all the necessary support to succeed. And not just the government, the international agencies and foreign countries that are truly supportive of the Commission, it’s time for them to key in and be involved. The job done by this commission is not for this generation but for the future generation.”
Also on the visit was the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens- Petter Kjemprud, the Secretary to the Commission, Emmanuel Adegboyega Aremo and other senior management staff of the EFCC.

Abuja Airport Runway 96% Ready.

It all appears set for the reopening of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, after six weeks of runway rehabilitation exercise as Airport Reopens Next Wednesday.

While workers are busy with finishing touches on the critical infrastructure, local airlines and their foreign counterparts have reopened sales and bookings on the Abuja route.
With the cheering development, air travel activities and businesses in and around Abuja can return to normal.

The operators, including those that suspended operations while the temporary closure lasted, were motivated by the Federal Government’s claim that the new runway was 96 per cent ready.
Recall that the Abuja airport was on March 9, temporarily shut for repairs of its only runway. The runway has been in use since the airport was built in 1982, and expired some 14 years ago. After much debates for and against, the rehabilitation exercise was awarded for the sum of N5.8 million, while Abuja-bound traffic is diverted to recently upgraded Kaduna International Airport (KIA).
The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, while inspecting the final lap of asphalt laying on Monday, confirmed the 96 per cent completion of the rehabilitation, with the assurance that the airport will reopen for operations come April 19.
An elated Sirika said: “This is runway 22 where the work terminates. Remember work started from the other end which is 04. You can see that we have finished asphalting and we are at 96 per cent completion. The marking of the runway and lightings are going on simultaneously. This is three to four days’ work and we still have about eight days to go. We are happy and we are on course,” he said.
The minister said notwithstanding the pressure to deliver on schedule, the construction team spared no resources to ensure standards in line with modern technology.

Sirika gave assurance that the runway will not retain rain water with the introduction of new technology. “There is a new technology where glass glide is put in the process of constructing the runway to reinforce it, to give it extra strength and prevent cracks. That is what we have done at the Abuja airport runway.
“This is the first time any Nigerian runway is being treated with such material and that material is a 50 tonner. We had to fly it into Nigeria to ensure that it comes in time for this job. I am very happy and I thank Nigerians for bearing with us and also thank President Muhammadu Buhari for believing in us that we can do it,” Sirika said.
A lot of activities have, however, resumed ahead of next Wednesday’s reopening of the airport. The Guardian observed operating local airlines already making bookings on the Lagos-Abuja, Sokoto-Abuja-Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna, Port Harcourt-Abuja among others for next week flights.
Spokesman of Dana Air, Kingsley Ezenwa, said the airline started selling ticket to Abuja after the minister’s declaration that the airport would reopened as scheduled.
Ezenwa said: “We have started selling tickets for Abuja. We started receiving booking demands for Abuja and we have started selling, starting from April 20 a day after the reopening date. We are hoping that government would fulfill their promise and reopen the airport on 19th,” he said.
Foreign airlines, including those that suspended operations during the closure are also not left out in the reopening plan. President of foreign airlines association in Nigeria, Kingsley Nwokoma, told reporters that foreign airlines have opened booking for tickets and cargo flights to Abuja.
Nwokoma said: “After the Minister of State, Aviation, Senator Sirika staked his job and seconded by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, some foreign airlines have started selling tickets to Abuja. Everyone believes that the ministers will keep to their words. Even cargo booking has started for Abuja airport. That one is easier because it is not as sensitive as passenger service. Let us see how it plays.
“In a civilised country, if they give you a date people will work with that date. But since the minister has put his job on the line, we are confident that flights will start in Abuja after next week,” Nwokoma said.

Serap urges President Buhari to Refer high-profile corruption cases to ICC

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “adopt a revolutionary approach to his government’s fight against corruption by referring high-level official corruption cases to the International Criminal Court for investigation and possible prosecution.
Following a string of court rulings against high-profile corruption cases last week.
The organization said, “As a state party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the government should also consider drawing from the expertise, experience, and international best practices of the court to complement the mandates and powers of our anti-corruption agencies and judiciary to successfully and satisfactorily investigate, prosecute and hear high-profile corruption cases.”

In a statement dated 9 April 2017 and signed by SERAP deputy director Timothy Adewale the organization said that, “The latest setbacks in the prosecution of high-profile corruption cases show the need for effective enforcement measures to weed out, expose, and punish grand corruption in the country. Referring large-scale corruption cases to the International Criminal Court would in the short-medium term improve deterrence, and at the minimum demonstrate a symbolic commitment to confront grand corruption head on.”
Buhari
According to the organization, “Referral to the ICC should be considered as a stop-gap measure, and as part of an all-embracing strategy that would inevitably require a fundamental reform of the criminal justice system and the strengthening and empowerment of the country’s anti corruption agencies.”

“SERAP argues that corruption by high-ranking officials and their families and associates is an international crime, especially given the sheer amounts of national wealth involved, and the devastating effects of such plundering, including political instability, weak rule of law, and destruction of the country’s economy.”
“Without effective investigation and prosecution of high-ranking public officials charged with corruption, and a judiciary that is willing and able to satisfactorily play its own interpretative role, this government’s fight against corruption may sadly turn out to be all motion and no movement, and this will eventually undermine the legitimacy of the anticorruption efforts.”
“SERAP believes that radical and more robust criminal enforcement measures are necessary to appreciably improve anti-corruption efforts, including by equipping, empowering and providing opportunities for training and re-training of those charged with the investigation and prosecution of large-scale corruption so that they can fearlessly, impartially, efficiently and energetically enforce anti-corruption laws and ensure justice for the countless victims of corruption in the country.”
“It should not be the case that only petty offenders are successfully prosecuted while high profile corrupt officers escape punishment and justice. Prosecuting the ‘small fry’ and leaving the ‘big fish’ to go unpunished would send a particularly damaging message about the government’s commitment to end large-scale official corruption, legitimize offenders’ impunity, and clearly violate the underlying legal and moral assumptions that a government will treat all persons equally, fairly, and with respect.”
“Effectively prosecuting high-ranking officials would help to persuade foreign jurisdictions keeping stolen public funds, and facilitate international cooperation and assistance that may lead to the recovery of such assets.”
“Efforts must also be intensified to apply stronger preventive measures to ensure that Nigerians are informed of the dangers of corruption. By ensuring that the Nigerian public views grand corruption with a ‘human face,’ the public may be more likely to build a united front and demand change from their leaders, which, in turn, would gradually strengthen Nigeria’s political will to end the problem. This is the surest way to help keep Nigeria fair, just, stable and prosperous.”
“As the situation in the country has shown, corruption is costly to good governance, human rights and national development, and leads to erosion of confidence in good governance, rule of law and economic stability. SERAP argues that grand corruption in the country violates fundamental human values, and the values protected by international human rights law, as well as negates the doctrine of fiduciary relations that obligate public officers to faithfully perform the duties of their office, and to preserve state property.”
It would be recalled that last week, a Federal High Court in Lagos issued an order unfreezing the Skye account of a former First Lady, Patience Jonathan. The EFCC had in November 2016 filed an application before the court seeking an order freezing the account. The commission had contended that the funds were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. The account is said to harbour the sum of $5.8 million.
Also, Justice Abulazeez Anka of a Federal High Court in Lagos vacated a freeze order on the account of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, after initially ordering a temporary forfeiture of N75 million found in his Guarantee Trust Bank account. Further, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory discharged a judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja of all 18-count charges of fraud brought against him, his wife and a senior lawyer.

A Nigerian build a jet.

Lagos is synonymous with heavy traffic and congestion but self taught inventor, Kehinde Durojaiye, might have the answer to the city’s woes: a jet car that can run on land, sea and in the air.
Durojaiye, nicknamed as ‘Kenny jet,’ calls his ambitious invention ‘an aero-amphibious jet car’ and he told CNN he has achieved two out of his three goals.

Durojaiye confirmed he had tested it in the sea and a lot of people were surprised it can move on the land and sea.

He said he has traveled as far as Ibadan (84 miles away from Lagos) in his car and claims it can move 120 kilometers per hour on land and at least six knots on the sea.
In a sea of Toyotas and Hyundais, Durojaiye’s unconventional looking car certainly turns heads.
Behind the wheel of the aero-amphibious car
The 46-year old who is a keen inventor since childhood,
spends a lot of time at his workshop, which sits on a dump site next to the Lagos lagoon.
The married father of four has made four prototype cars, from everyday, discarded materials like wood, plastic and Styrofoam.
Inside the latest version you’ll find an office chair, a keyboard and a steering wheel recycled from a keke napep [tricycle].

He explained he spends hours refining prototypes of the car, hoping that one day he will make it fly.

“We want the whole world to know it is possible to have a kind of machine that can move on land, on sea and fly and perhaps move under the sea,”

Presidency Tasks States On Arms a d lights Control

The Presidency has called on governments of the 36 States in Nigeria to take proactive measures in tackling the growing state of insecurity occasioned by illicit flow of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) through effective Disarmament, Demobilisation and Rehabilitation (DDR) programmes.
This was the highlight of the opening of the two-day National Dialogue on Civilian Disarmament and FOR in Nigeria on Wednesday tagged; ” Initiating Dialogue with State Governments on Issues of Civil Disarmament”, organised by the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM) with the support of the Bonn International Centre for Conversion (BICC).
The Chairman of PRESCOM, Amb. Emmanuel Imohe, said that in strict geographic terms, the problems of possession and access to deadly weapons by sundry non-state actors have become a phenomenon, prevalent in most States in Nigeria.
Imohe raised the alarm on high rate of arms proliferation in communities across the country, blaming it on” criminals who have turned several communities into very unsafe and insecure zones”.
Against this backdrop, he appealed to all states of the federation to establish weapons collection and recovery programmes with a view to mopping up illegally acquired arms being used to perpetrate crimes in commuties.
The committee chairman said the advise was predicated on information at its disposal that illegally acquired weapons were still in large quantity everywhere in the country in spite of the disarmament efforts it has so far carried out.
Imohe noted that state governments were of strategic importance in any conflict resolution and weapons collection initiative.
He said: “The need to involve states in the arms disarmament project became imperative given that combating the manifestations of insecurity such as armed violence, terrorism, small arms and light weapons proliferation and trans-border criminality without a collaborative partnership with states and local governments communities was an exercise in futility.
“The dialogue session was initiated to moot the idea of disarmament programme to states government given that state governments have an indispensable role in helping to mop up weapons that been illegally acquired by several unauthorized elements in the society.”
Imo while regretting that the problems of possession and access to deadly weapons by sundry non-state actors have become a phenomenon, prevalent in most states in the country, commended Benue, Rivers, Katsina, Imo, Zamfara and Kaduna states, for blazing the trail in the DDR programmes.
He continued: “The drive to acquire deadly weapons by communities either for their so-called self defence or for the pursuit of a peculiar agenda is degenerating into what is no classified as arms race leading to communal stockpile of deadly weapons”.
“At PRESCOM,we are reminded from time to time by individuals and groups who tell us that weapons are still every where in the country.
“This assertion is perhaps an expression of how awash the country has become as a result of the easy access that non-state actors have had to these deadly weapons.” “The problem is indeed profound but is not one which PRESCOM alone can resolve without support from other stakeholders.
“It is also not one which the Federal Government could by itself resolve without seeking the cooperation and collaboration of state governments.”
“The respective communities where Nigeria has experienced security challenges do not exist in a vacuum but are entities within given states,”he added.
In the same vein, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj-Gen. Monguno (rtd), said the desire to bring the state governments into a national strategy to address the widespread possession of illicit SAWLs by unauthorised non-state actors is something worth doing in order to bring conflicts across the country to an enduring resolution.
Monguno who was represented by the Director, Defence Affairs, Office of NSA (ONSA), Abba Mohammed Dikko, noted that “any conflict prevention and reduction mechanism without a commiserate buy-in by state governments in whose geographical areas some of these conflicts occur would be counter productive.
In this wise, he said, State governments have an important role to play in finding lasting solutions to the problem and should therefore, be encouraged to be part of the process.
“In this particular case, the fight to rid our communities of the menace of illicit firearms is one area in which we solicit partnership and collaboration with State Governments,” he remarked.

Lagos Reads Riot Act To Mammy Market’s Stall Owners. Ikoyi-Lekki Clean Up

The Chairman of the Special Committee of Lagos State Government on the Clean-Up of Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island, Mr Tunji Bello has read the riot act to all stall owners of the Giwa Barracks, DHQ Mammy Market overlooking Kingsway Road in Ikoyi whose customers block the road with their vehicles to relocate the parking lot to inside the barracks or risk their vehicles being impounded.
Bello, who is also the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), spoke with newsmen on Sunday after an unscheduled inspection visit to the area as part of preparations for the commencement of the Clean -Up of the inner streets.
He said the activities of the motorists who patronize the market, park their vehicles indiscriminately across the road and the setback was causing a hindrance to free flow of traffic in the area.
According to Bello, severally and at peak hours, the lanes for traffic on Kingsway Road which is a very vital link road has been reduced to single lane due to indiscriminate disregard for traffic rules by the motorists.
He said part of the options open to the State Government includes walling off the whole stretch of the setback and drainage alignment which has been converted to parking lots despite repeated warnings.
He explained that the government is also in consultation with the Military authorities on how the process of convincing the stall owners to relocate the outlets of the markets from the roads could be sped up and would not continue to tolerate distortions to its city master plan.
He reiterated the preparedness of the Committee to implement the directive of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on the commencement of the Clean-Up of the inner streets from next weekend.
Bello listed some of the streets that would be touched by the total Clean-Up in inner Ikoyi to include Cooper Road, Cameron Road, Ademola Street and Akanbi Danmole Street, among others.
Inner streets to be affected in Victoria Island, according to Bello, are Tiamiyu Savage Street, Akanbi Kenku Street, Kofo Abayomi Street, Oko Awo Street, Olosa Street, Akinbo Savage Street and Ologun Agbaje Street, and several others.
The SSG also said the additional mop up of already cleaned areas directed by the Governor was already in progress, reiterating the need for all residents to assist in sustaining the gains of the exercise while the government continues with its advocacy programmes.
The Committee also informed that in order to make the second stage of the Clean-Up exercise a hitch free one, Mobile Courts would also be sitting to try all offenders on all days of the exercise.
“We will bring the full effect of the law to bear on whoever contravenes the provisions of the State Environmental Sanitation laws.
“For all the mechanics and roadside automobile engineers who have been dislodged from the major streets but have relocated to the inner streets and have converted all the walkways, playgrounds, you have still not reached your operating destination. The Special Committee will come after you when the second phase commences. The earlier you realize that there is no place for roadside mechanics, street traders, illegal shanties or abandoned properties in those areas, the better for you,” Bello warned.
He also reiterated the determination of the Ambode administration to restore the original master plan of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki by checking the activities of street traders, owners of shanties and roadside automobile repairers who have converted many dual carriage lanes to single lanes and walkways with indiscriminate parking and other forms of illegalities in the areas.
